NEW week of October 29

Not much is new yet again, there is some interesting developments on the video camera side, tv, and accessories. There is another photography related conference on the horizon. We may be in a quiet before yet another storm.

If you have any other interesting news, feel free to add it in the comments below.

NEW week of October 27

This will cover the little bit of new products from after Photokina, coving the weeks of September 17-October 27.

Sorry for the long delay… but there really has not been much new in this whole time… just a ton of reviews and commentary..

Nikon

Released a new 1 series camera, the Nikon 1 V2. This is a small update tech wise, but a large jump in features and they scaled up the ugly a lot… http://www.dpreview.com/articles/6666574013/hands-on-with-nikon-v2

They also announced the development of a bunch of new lenses for their mirror less system.. http://www.photographyblog.com/news/nikon_1_nikkor_32mm_6.7-13mm_10-100mm_lenses/

On to the good stuff… They announced a 70-200 F4 with VR.. this lens and its Canon counterpart, are nice for nature shooters who don't want the added bulk of the 2.8… it is also a lot cheaper… but not cheap by any means.. retail is about $1400… take a look http://www.dpreview.com/articles/9864568961/hands-on-with-the-af-s-nikkor-70-200mm-f4g-ed-vr

Software

There have been a ton of updates lately, largely to support the new cameras.

One piece of software that I really do like Phase One's Capture One Pro just released version 7. I find this software very nice to use, easy to get around, powerful for editing, and far nicer than Aperture or Lightroom. The biggest problem I have with it is its price (299) and the fact that there are little available for plugins. If they could get the plugins to work it would be a very nice piece of software. but it is def worth a look! http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/10/25/Phase-One-releases-Capture-One-Pro-version-7

THE BEST NEW PRODUCT

thought I would save this for last, I think this is a great new product and def deserves some attention. If you use a point & shoot, you can now easily use filter. this is a huge step, p&s cameras have come a long way and are far better the DSLRs from only a couple yrs ago. the ability to use filters only gets them closer and allows the photographer to be more creative. I hope this spurs the development of more like items.. take a look http://www.gizmodo.com.au/2012/10/magnetic-quick-release-mount-brings-filters-to-your-high-end-point-and-shoot/

NEW week of September 17

Its not yet Photokina… so there is still more… wow.. I am going to give a quick summary, but generally check out http://www.dpreview.com for details.. there are just too many to link to them individually. Some may come from another source.

Its Monday, but it was a busy day…

Phase on and Mamiya

Announced a new medium format camera, with Autofocus. It will cost around $6000 for the body and lens.

Panasonic

Lets start with a promise, Panasonic will sell a 42.5mm F1.2 and 150mm F2.8 for their micro 4/3rds system. should be released 2013-2014

They also announced a 35-100mm F2.8 zoom. This lens has optical stabilization and will back a great all round shooter.

Announced a new high-end 4/3rds body the DMC-GH3. Has a weather sealed body, and has been geared towards video. with mic inputs and your choice of several different video modes.

Olympus

Keeping with the 4/3rds, Olympus has announced a 60mm F2.8 macro, and the also made a promise of a 17mm F1.8. Remember that the 4/3rds are interchangeable between Panasonic and Olympus.

Olympus is entering a field of Point-and-Shoots that used to only be occupied by Canon G series. they have announced the XZ-2iHS. It has a back-illuminated sensor and touch screen. it has a 28-112mm F1.802.5 lens.  Sounds like a good competitor to the new G15, and sells for only $599.

Olympus also replaced a couple of the PENS, the new E-PL5 and E-PM2 with the same sensor, they differ in some options. take a look if you shoot the 4/3rds.

Fujifilm

A new high end point and shoot. the XF1 looks like a nice pocket camera, and with their EXR technology it will take great pictures. One to consider if you dont want to lug that big camera around.

Canon

Canon finally broke their science, with a canon blast (good pun huh)

Lets start small, the new Powershot S110, using a CMOS it will have great low light performance, touchscreen, and the canon name commands the $449 price tag.

An update to the G series, the new G15 replaces the G12 (they seem to be missing a couple numbers there, back to Grade 1!!) has an upgraded aperture of F1.8-2.8 and a zoom of 28-140mm.

They also added the SX50 HS, which is another huge zoom bridge camera. Its big claim to fame will be the 24-1200mm zoom lens, thats 50x zoom.

Last but defiantly not least, Canon announced the new 6D. This is geared to the same people at the A99, and D600. It is a full frame, 20.2 mp with a bunch of new features. Surprisingly they have included Wi-fi and GPS, Canon seems to have gotten the memo that people at not willing to pay for dongles and they don't look nice/are very inconvenient. It looks like it will be and interesting couple of months as these 3 competitors are reviewed and played with.

Its Tuesday but all of these came out Monday afternoon. as you can see Photokina is the when everything gets announced.

Leica

They are brining a new medium format system, the S system. includes a body, and several lenses. body will retail for about $22,000.

Leica was first to this 'mirror less' concept with their rangefinder camera. now companies are copy the concept but at a lower price, Sony announced the Rx-1, and Fujifilm has a couple out now. Leica announced a new version the M-E which will retail for $5,450, lets just say its not he spec list that commands that price.

They also updated their top rangefinder the M, it will now take movies, has a full frame 24mp sensor. sounds pretty familiar, the price on this on is $6,950.

Misc

A whole new bunch of bags have been developed, because if you company didn't announce what you wanted, why not buy a new bag?? http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/18/new-bags-from-lowepro-new-joby-gorilla-gear-and-new-acme-made-bags/

Sigma

Announced three new lenses but no prices, they have moved away from the rough speckled, matte coating, and now look like a normal lens. actually look very similar to the Zeiss line from Sony.

35mm F1.4 for the "art" shooter

17-40mm F2.8-4.8 Macro for the "contemporary" user

and the 120-300 F2.8 For the "sports" shooter

Sigma is relaunching how they market lenses using these categories to target what you want. its a good idea for the consumer who isn't sure about what lens they want next (not us tho, thats why we have photo club :P)

http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/17/sigma-announces-new-lenses-segments-them-into-art-contemporary-and-sports/#more-28805

Now that Tuesday has come and gone, what else has been announced.

Hasselblad

Ever want to buy a NEX camera but pay $6500 for one? well then Hasselblad has a camera for you. the new Lunar is a 24.3mp mirror less camera that will accept all of Sony's E-mount lenses (and A via the adapter). Now this camera does have a very different shell wrapped around and it looks much easier to hold with larger lenses but the price point you pay for that.

They also announced that Sony and Hasselblad will be working jointly on new projects going forward. The Lunar is the first, and a DSLR will be coming. These partnerships are getting interesting, the Sony company seems to be investing its photography business with a few other camera companies, first it was Olympus now Hasselblad. With combinations and partnerships it may just challenge the status quo of Nikon/Canon.

Zeiss

have announced a few more lenses for the NEX line (Incase you did want to spend a few hundred on lenses in front of the new Lunar).

12mm F2.8, 32mm F1.8, and a 50mm F2.8 macro. This is a really good selection of lenses for a line-up that is getting very extensive.

Phottix

This is an aftermarket company that build accessories for trigger your camera wirelessly, remote flashes, and well a ton of neat random stuff. they have announced a new line of TTL triggers based on the Strato platform. these are the same type of triggers i use and love, but with the addition of TTL. they are compatible with Nikon, Canon, and Sony. Not sure if you can control a Nikon flash from a sony trigger tho. A great competitor to some other companies who's triggering products are insanely expensive.

Lensbaby

Announced a new Spark lens. its a 50mm with an equivalent f5.6. this is their low end lens costing only about $80. these lenses are a blast and can make a ton of unique pictures. they are something I highly recommend.

If you have any other interesting news, feel free to add it in the comments below.

Woke up Wednesday morning.. and Sony had at it, and wow.

Sony

First a new flash, the HVL-F60M, it looks like it wont be compatible with older Sony cameras. Looks like hot shoe changes are coming to Sony http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/first-impressions-sony-hvl-f60m-flash/

For something really interesting, the new RX-1. It is a fixed lens compact camera. BUTTTT with a FULL FRAME sensor. It would appear that Sony is attempting to grab some Leica market share http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/sonys-rx-1-is-the-worlds-first-full-frame-digital-point-and-shoot-camera/

The NEX system got a massive update, a new NEX6, and three more lenses. It looks like Sony now has the most complete compact mirrorless system, for now. http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/sony-expands-the-nex-series-with-the-nex-6-and-three-lenses/

Need a new video camera? have a NEX camera? well Sony announced a new video camera that accepts the NEX lenses. the VG900 will cost you about 1800 take a look, http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/e-mount-goes-full-frame-with-the-new-vg900/

On to the SLT cameras. Sony finally reenters the Full Frame market with the A99. it is the first full frame SLT, has a 24.3 megapixel sensor, dual AF system, 14 bit RAW (A first for sony). Should be a real contender yet again http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/announcing-the-sony-a99-the-first-full-frame-slt-camera/

They also announced a spiffy new lens to go with it, the 300mm F2.8 if you have 7500 to spend and dont know where to go, this would be a good one to buy http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/09/12/announcing-the-sony-a99-the-first-full-frame-slt-camera/

On Thursday Nikon had at it..

Nikon

Announced a new lens for their mirrorless system, 1. They announced an 18.5mm F1.8 prime. This buys you a regular 50mm and all for about $190. not bad at all.

They also announced their newest full frame camera. They shrunk down the body, and maybe it a little more affordable. The new D600 brings a 24mp full frame sensor, and the body retails for $2099.

Tamron

Tamron announced a new lens, they have updated their 70-200 F2.8. This is a full frame lens so the crop sensor camera's get to use mostly the sweet spot. The price was not announced, but will likely be much cheaper than the named counterparts.

It is finally Friday.. and I think the eye of the storm has hit

Samyang

Announce a new lens, a 10mm f2.8 prime. this is still only a prototype but will likely be inexpensive and have wicked good quality. Still waiting for more details about their new tilt-shift

NEW week of August 27

Not a hugely busy week, but some interesting annoucments none the less..

Sony announced their newest NEX series camera. A follow up to the well reviewed NEX-5. DPreview did a hands on preview here: http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/08/29/Just-posted-Sony-Alpha-NEX-5R-hands-on-preview-wi-fi-capable-camera-with-apps-and-hybrid-af-system

Samsung announced a new point and shoot. This is their first camera that runs the full Android softwear, this is now a phone with an amazing camera (but you can't call). http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/08/29/samsung-announces-galaxy-camera-with-android-OS-4-1-jelly-bean

For those of you that love video, and have a ton of cash Canon had an annoucment for you, check out the new EOS C100. http://www.dpreview.com/news/2012/08/29/Canon-announces-EOS-C100

and if that wasn't enough money for you to spend Zeiss has your back to put some new glass in front of that new C100. Take a look http://photorumors.com/2012/08/30/new-from-carl-zeiss-cz-2-28-80mmt2-9-and-cp-2-25mmt2-1-cinema-lenses/

For those of you thinking about getting about getting a GoPro camera, Sony just annouced a competitor (there are more and more all the time now) but should be worth the look. http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/08/29/ready-set-sony-action-cam/

If you have anyother interesting news, feel free to add it in the comments below.

NEW week of August 20

What a difference a week makes, one week closer and most companies had something to bring out, largely point and shoots.

Pentax cam out with their new X-5 bridge camera, point and shoot senor with a large zoom, fantasic price, amazing spec sheet, cheap price, the other guys have nothing that can touch it.. (http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/08/22/introducing-the-pentax-x-5-camera/)

Canon attempted a response, and realised a comparable camera for much more money, and not nearly are pretty looking, but it is loaded with automated software to help take the picture. (http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/08/22/canons-new-powershot-sx500is-does-the-framing-and-zooming-for-you/)

Nikon went and annouced a whole bunch of new point and shoots, of particular interest is the P7700, aimed to be a direct competator to the Canon G series, it offeres the user all the controls of a DSLR but in a compact frame to allow easy traveling. these cameras are great for the photographer who travels, doesn't want to carry their DSLR, but still wants to retain quality and control. (http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/08/22/nikon-announces-the-nikon-p7700-camera-for-enthusiasts/)

Along with a few other models Nikon introduced the first camera, with an Android software. it would be in response to the problem that companies are facing in smartphone cameras removing the need for a pocket cam. Cell phone companies are making phones with great cameras, so now Nikon is making a camera with a mobile OS. This opens the door to all those apps and editing goodness to be done right on the camera. (http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/08/22/s800c-is-the-first-android-nikon-camera/)

Not to be out done, Olympus annouced a new bridge camera. with all the trouble the company has been in, they are definatly in a troubled spot with their camera division. they came close to a record amount of zoom, however i have always foudn its difficult to hold steady enough anything over 20-25x depending, if you are looking for a birding camera and dont want to buy a DSLR with a lens that is a few thousand dollars, this might be the camera to check out, how does 890mm zoom sound?? (http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/08/22/seems-like-olympus-is-trying-to-break-the-zoom-record-with-their-new-sp-820-uz/)

Big news for any Nikon users looking for a DSLR upgrade, the D700 has offically been discontinued. this would mean a new model is coming out, and so close to Photokina, could it just be a conicidence??

NEW week of August 13

This week has been a slow one. with the approach of Photokina in September most companies are keep thier products under wraps until then.

If you shoot a canon T4i, the recall has been expanded. Refer to your serial number, if the sixth digit is a "1" contact Canon.

Dpreview.com has posted a review on Canon's T4i hybrid AF system.

The ESIS award winners have been announced. Note of interest, the winners in the tops spots were shared pretty evenly between Canon, Nikon and Sony. www.eisa.eu/awards/history/3/photo.html

The Pentax K-5 is offically discountinued in the US, replacement likely at Photokina in September.

If you find your camera and lenses a bit dull, check out www.pimpyourcam.com and make your camera as unique as you!

thephoblographer.com posted a buyers guide on Rokinon lenses. these lenses are generally cheap, with amazing picture quality (i own the 8mm fisheye, and thinking about their 35mm) [http://www.thephoblographer.com/2012/08/12/the-phoblographers-guide-to-the-right-rokinon-lens-for-you/] REMEBER these lenses are sold under a ton of different names, Henrys carries them under the Opteka brand, there is also Samyang and a few more!

New Website part 2

Thank you all for your patince in this working out.

I recieved some feedback and comments on the site, and they were mostly positive, and I was also able to get the few remaining issues resolved. I am offically launching the new website. I hope that you can all navigate the site with ease, if there are any problems please let me know and I will do my best to figure them out, but no promises.

One of the remaining tasks is designing an "email me" button like the previous site, however the contact form will work for now, and you can always email me at sudbury.shutterbugs@me.com.

If you would like to browse the old site, it is not going to be updated anymore, but it can still be found here, http://www.sudburyshutterbugs.ca/Shutterbugs_old/Welcome.html and should work until I have to delete it, or it is too old and serves no purpose.

I hope you all enjoy the new site!
